Save the date! The Fall 2017 Study Abroad Fair, sponsored by the Center for International Education Services (now located in the Panhellenic Building), is set for Tuesday, October 2 from 10:00 to 2:00 in the Rose Theater lobby.
Class in Cuzco - Discover Peru!
5 Weeks - Mid-May to Late June, 2018
Discover Peru this summer and study in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Cuzco, located in the Andes Mountains! Join other UofM students and travel to the ancient capital city of the Incas, where the city is an extension of the classroom. The city's unique history and location (near Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World) allow you to study your subjects in a hands-on manner. You will take 2 classes for a total of 6-9 credits, and you may select a Spanish language course as one of those courses or take two electives taught in English.
With a choice of housing arrangements, unique course offerings, field trips, on-site staff, and low cost of living, this program is ideal for students who want to gain an immersive, cultural academic experience. Additional excursions, including a visit to Machu Picchu, are available at an extra cost for those who want to do more exploring!
Passport - Students should apply for their passports no later than March 1. Students who have not applied by this date may need to expedite their application, which has an additional cost. See the Study Abroad Office for questions on your passport. **Students may submit their completed passport application and documentation at the Spring Study Abroad Fair on Wednesday, January 24 from 10 am to 2 pm -- no appointment needed!
Your University: USIL - Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola International Center is located in the historic center of the city. An extension of their main campus in Lima, the Cuzco location was once a residence of the Inca nobility, which was then turned into a Spanish colonial-style house. This historic place of study offers modern facilities, including a computer lab and Wi-Fi along with a library and conference hall.
Your Courses: Students will select two courses, for a total of 6-9 credits. Elective
courses are 3 credits and taught in English unless otherwise stated. Most English-taught
elective courses include multiple tentatively-planned field trips, which may include
museums, archaeological sites, native rural communities, landscapes rich in biodiversity,
and cultural events! Spanish language courses are worth 6 credits. Students taking
Spanish courses will take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival for placement
into the appropriate course. Syllabi are available in the online application!

Your Housing: Students may select either a host family stay or live in the furnished university residence Casa Don Ignacio.
- Host Family Stay - Live with a local Peruvian family! Students are usually given their own room, and the family provides 3 meals/day, seven days a week. Sometimes there will be another student living in the same home. Students living with host families will typically take a 10-15 minute taxi ride to get to school in the city center. The average cost of this taxi ride is only about $1.50! Students will have a coordinator on-site to speak with in case of any concerns regarding their housing.
- Casa Don Ignacio - Live in a shared (typically 2-3 students), furnished room at the student residence Casa Don Ignacio. The Casa is located near the Plaza de Armas, the central square, and is close to many stores and restaurants. Amenities include a 24-hour front desk, wireless internet, computer room, dining room, laundry service (additional fee) and safe deposit box. This is a no-smoking residence. Breakfast is provided daily in the dining room. Students are responsible for their lunch and dinner.
Fun Fact: Did you know the average high temperature year-round in Cuzco is in the low to mid 60s? Peru is in the southern hemisphere, so seasons are reversed. It's high elevation and proximity to the equator also account for the consistent average high temperatures. Escape the Memphis heat this summer in Peru!

DR. DETRAZ & dr. PEKSEN named editors of international studies review
Dr. Nicole Detraz and Dr. Dursun Peksen (Department of Political Science) have been named Editors of the International Studies Review. ISR is a leading journal in the field of international relations published by the International Studies Association. The editorial team also includes our own alum Chad Clay (M.A. '07), who is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia. This is an extraordinary accomplishment and speaks to the high quality of Drs. Detraz & Peksen's scholarship.
Operation Broken Silence!
Former University of Memphis International Studies Major and current executive director of Operation Broken Silence Mark Hackett was recently featured in the Memphis Flyer for his film work covering the stories of Sudanese refugees. Mark was featured in the Spring edition of our program's newsletter.
