Benefits of Having Your Computer in Active Directory
Windows 2003 Active Directory is designed for distributed networking as a centralized
place to store information about network resources and users and is one of the basic
building blocks for the University of Memphis Information Technology community. The
vision is for each department, division and college to be a part of the community.
As in any community, the organization is only as strong as the members that participate.
The goal of the Information Technology Department (ITD) is to provide the resources
and services to best serve the entire community. Active Directory enables ITD to provide
the following services:
Current Benefits of Active Directory
- Universal User ID's (UUID) are synchronized with Active Directory so that users can
log into computers with the same username and password that is used elsewhere.
- Creating and maintaining local user accounts is no longer necessary for workstations.
- Forgotten desktop passwords can be changed by going to iAM.memphis.edu.
- Computer policies can be set at the college, division or department levels to automatically
update and secure workstations.
- Sharing resources such as files and printers is easier because Active Directory users
have access to all UUIDs and groups to set permissions. The creation of local user
accounts for sharing is no longer necessary.
- Since Exchange is integrated with Active Directory, it is no longer necessary to provide
usernames and passwords to access Outlook on workstations that are members of Active
Directory.

can provide:
- How to use Group Policies
- User and Group Management
- Training requested by LSP's
- Software deployed to the computers ‘anytime, anywhere' through the use of Softricity
- Windows Updates to keep computers patched automatically
- Symantec Antivirus to protect the computers
- Any additional services and resources as requested by members of the Active Directory
community
