Migrating Non-Domain Computers
Through the Use of Moveuser.exe

NOTE: These directions makes the assumption that the targeted computer has been removed from a domain.

1. Precreate the computer account in the appropriate OU by using the “Active Directory Computers and Users" admin tool.
2. Log on to the user's workstation as the local administrator.
3. Change the machine's membership to the AD domain using the appropriate UOM credentials. NOTE: Only LSP's can join machines to the UOM domain.
   1. Right-click My Computer and select properties.
   2. Click the Computer Name tab.
   3. Click the Change button.
   4. Under Member of, select Domain.
   5. In the Domain text box, type: uom.memphis.edu.
   6. Click OK.
   7. When prompted with Enter the name and password of an account with permission to join the domain, use your AD account that has permissions to join computers to AD (i.e. uom\uuid and then type your password).
   8. Click OK.
   9. After a few seconds you should get a dialog box stating Welcome to the uom.memphis.edu domain.
   10. Click OK.
   11. You will be told that you must restart the computer for these changes to take effect. Click OK.
   12. On the System properties window, click OK.
   13. When prompted to Restart your computer now, click NO (We will reboot after a few more steps have been completed).
4. If the user has local admin rights, you will need to add their domain user account (uom\uuid) to the local admin group using the local Computer Management tool. You may also want to add your LSP-Group to local admin while you arere here (use your AD credentials to authenticate when prompted).
5. While still logged on as the local administrator, migrate the users local account profile to a new UOM local profile. This is necessary to keep the users current “My Documents" and other profile settings with the new account. Use the moveuser program as follows: moveuser <local user> <domain\domain user> /k NOTE: You must include the /k option or the local user account will be deleted after the move. Example: moveuser joeuser uom\joeuser /k).
6. Once the profile migration is complete, restart the computer.
7. The user will now be able to log onto the machine using their uom\uuid credentials.
