Memphis welcomes new journalism faculty

New Teachers cropped

Assistant Professors Matt Haught and Ashley Furrow start tenure-track positions at the University of Memphis.

Three new faculty members join the University of Memphis Journalism Department this fall.

Assistant professor Ashley Furrow earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from University of Florida, her master's in journalism and her Ph.D. in journalism/mass communication from Ohio University.

Ashley worked as a Web and copy editor for the sports department at The Gainesville Sun and as a copy editor for, the fourth largest sports site. Her teaching areas are visual communication and broadcast journalism.

Assistant professor Matthew Haught earned his B.A. and M.A. from Marshall University and is completing his Ph.D. in mass communication at the University of South Carolina.

Matthew has six years of experience in newspaper and magazine design, editing, reporting and Web development. His teaching areas center on visual communication, including print and digital design, photography, social media and technology. His research explores the connection between visual communications and culture through the mass media. 

Tori Cliff, the department’s first faculty member at U of M’s Lambuth campus, received her B.A in journalism from Middle Tennessee State University and her M.A. in journalism from the University of Memphis.

Tori worked as national and major accounts manager and preprint coordinator for the Jackson Sun. She has also worked as a writer, editor, designer, media buyer, strategic planner, social media task force leader, competitive analysis researcher and event planner in her previous roles as director of marketing and public relations for Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and director of communication at Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tenn.

In addition to teaching journalism, Tori serves as media relations representative on the Lambuth campus.
