Our students and faculty participate in research projects that serve our neighbors.
Through our campaigns classes, we propose solutions for both profit and nonprofit
businesses and organizations. Among recent clients are Make-A-Wish, the U.S. Census,
Ford, Commercial Appeal, and Lifeblood.
Currently three faculty members are implementing a Strengthening Communities grant
in support of the “Smallest User” energy conservation initiative. The Journalism Department
has partnered with MLGW to create a competition between the Cooper Young and Evergreen
Neighborhood associations to see which can be the smallest user of energy.
The Journalism Department is the publisher of the Teen Appeal, a citywide high school
newspaper circulated to all Memphis city high schools, a grant-funded, 14-year partnership
with the Memphis City Schools, the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Memphis Commercial
Appeal. This publication opens opportunities for students to study journalism, opportunities
no longer available in most city high schools.
