In January 2010, Memphis Law relocated from the University of Memphis main campus
to the historic U.S. Custom House/Courthouse/Post Office overlooking the Mississippi
River in the heart of downtown Memphis. Built in 1878, with additions in 1903 and
1930, the 140,000-sqare-foot building is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places. A collection of historic photos can be found on the Memphis Law Flickr page.
The extensive renovation retained much of the historic structure and architectural
details: original Pony Express emblems, etched glass, brass window cages, wood beams
with intricate hand-stenciled designs, door knobs engraved with the scales of justice,
crown molding, and Tennessee marble floors and columns. The main lobby remains unchanged
from its original design, except for upgraded safety requirements.
Special features of the building:
- Five large classrooms with tiered floors and state-of-the-art AV/IT features
- Two courtrooms with AV/IT features, including the historic federal courtroom
- Five-level law library with numerous reading and study spaces
- Fourth floor reading room with 200 feet of windows offering a magnificent, panoramic
river view
- Large student lounge and spacious study areas
- On-site bookstore
- Legal clinic offices, interview rooms and library with a separate entrance plaza
- Student organization offices and student locker area
- Outdoor terraces overlooking the Mississippi River
- Completely wireless environment throughout the building
