Every student at the law school is a member of the Student Bar Association. We deal
with issues and put on events each year through various committees. A full description
of each event and the committee that oversees the planning and execution of that event
can be found below.
Barrister's Ball Barristers' Ball is a formal event that the SBA hosts for the law students and their
guests in the fall of each year. It is a social event designed to let students cut
loose and get to know each other outside of the classroom. It is generally held at
a downtown location and has either live music or a DJ in order to goad the students
onto the dance-floor.
Welcome Back Picnic at the Redbirds This annual SBA event follows the new student orientation in the fall. It is an important
event that is the returning students' first impression of the entering class, and
in turn the entering classes first impression of the returning students.
Golf Tournament Every Fall, the SBA hosts a golf tournament for students and their guests. Four person
teams compete in tournament style play to see who are the best golfers in law school.
The Tournament committee plans where it will be held and deals with all the scheduling
and logistics of this event.
Student Affairs The Student Affairs committee is an all year committee that deals with the issues
that students run into throughout the year. They work on things like implementing
an Honor Code, representing the students in the search for new faculty, and addressing
the general concerns of the students.
Speaker Series The SBA hosts at least two noted speakers a year at the law school. This committee
is in charge of finding these speakers, and planning the events that surround their
engagements. This is a year round committee.
Race Judicata Every Spring, the SBA hosts a 5k run to benefit Memphis Area Legal Services. This
event has grown through the years and requires a good deal of people to work out all
the details that go along with hosting a race. This is a committee that mainly meets
in the Spring, but can be a year round commitment from those who are interested.
SBA Auction Each Spring the SBA holds a fundraising auction at a downtown location. The proceeds
benefit SBA and help to pay for the events it puts on. The committee is charges with
finding the auction items, and planning the logistics of the event.
Flaw Review The SBA hosts an event each spring where the individual classes and the faculty are
encouraged to put on a skit making fun of the other classes and the peculiar things
that happened throughout the year. It is held at a downtown venue and is all in good
fun. The committee is in charge of finding the venue, and promoting and planning
the event.
Graduation Each Spring, the Graduation Committee plans a multitude of events to celebrate the
achievements of the outgoing class. They are in charge of planning the ceremony,
from venue to speakers, and also host an after graduation celebration at a downtown
location.
