Lydie Nadia Cabrera Pierre-Louis, Visiting Assistant Professor of Law, teaches Business
Organizations I, Secured Transactions, Corporate Finance, and Decedents’ Estates.
Prior to joining the Memphis Law faculty, she was an Assistant Professor of Law at
St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami, FL and a Visiting Assistant Professor
of Law at Florida International College of Law in Fall 2010, and University of Cincinnati
College of Law, in Spring 2011. Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis received her J.D. from
Fordham University School of Law, an M.P.A. from New York University Graduate School,
and her A.B. from Columbia University, Barnard College.
Full Biography Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis’ research crosses the disciplines of business law,
economic history, financial regulation, economic sociology, and the philosophical
principles of ethics, fidelity and justice. She writes critically about deregulation, the lack of transparency, the lack of enforcement
of securities laws, business ethics, and accountability of business entities and markets
from a Keynesian economics perspective. Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis’ scholarship has been published in the U.C. DAVIS BUSINESS LAW JOURNAL, ST. JOHN’S LAW REVIEW, FORDHAM JOURNAL OF CORPORATE
AND FINANCE LAW, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES, ENCYCLOPEDIA
OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY, AND INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED FINANCIAL ANALYSTS OF INDIA UNIVERSITY PRESS. She is a frequent contributor to the corporate justice blog and nuestras voces latinas
blog.
Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis has presented her scholarly research at leading universities
and forums including American University School of Law, The Chartered Institute of
Arbitrators in London, England, University of Seattle School of Law, University of
the West Indies Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad, West Indies, Georgetown University
School of Law, Eugene Dupuch Law School in Nassau, Bahamas, Chapman University School
of Law, Cayman Islands Law School in Grand Cayman, British West Indies, Loyola University Chicago, Boston University School of Law, Universitat Osnabruck,
Saxony Germany, University of Las Vegas, and Ohio State University.
Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis received her B.A. from Columbia University, Barnard
College with majors in economics and sociology. She received her M.P.A. from New York
University Graduate School with specializations in finance and public policy. She
received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, where she served as an editor
on the FORDHAM FINANCIAL, SECURITIES & TAX LAW FORUM, and the FORDHAM ENVIRONMENTAL LAW JOURNAL. She received a regional best speaker award in the 1996 Jessup International Moot
Court Competition. While in law school she served as a law clerk to Associate Judge
George Bundy Smith of the New York State Court of Appeals and Judge Allyne Ross of
the United States District Court, Eastern District of New York.
Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis began her legal career as a legal assistant to Arthur
Liman in the Michael Milken securities fraud defense litigation. Later, she practiced
law in New York City as a corporate associate at Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts
(currently Pillsbury Winthrop LP), where she represented multi-national corporations
in cross-border financings and securities offerings. Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis
was an Assistant Attorney General in the Investment Protection Bureau of New York
State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, where she enforced New York State securities
laws against the financial services industry including Bank of America, Bank One,
and Invesco Funds.
Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis has taught previously at St. John’s University School
of Law, where she was the inaugural director of the securities arbitration clinic.
She has also held faculty positions at University of Cincinnati College of Law, Florida
International University, and St. Thomas University. Professor Cabrera has been an
adjunct instructor at Columbia and New York Universities Graduate Business School
Executive MBA Programs. She is a native French and Spanish speaker.
Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis is a member of the Hispanic National Bar Association,
the New York State Bar Association, and the American Branch of the International Law
Association Committee on Multilateralism and the Accountability of International Organizations
to review the governance practices of the International Monetary Fund and the World
Bank. Professor Cabrera Pierre-Louis is admitted to practice law in the State of New
York, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the Second Circuit Court of
Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
