The University of Memphis School of Law welcomed 143 first-year students to its campus. The students come from fifty-one different institutions, including all public, state-assisted undergraduate institutions in Tennessee. The class is 57 percent men and 43 percent women, while 14 percent are students of color. The Honorable David S. Kennedy, Chief Judge, United State Bankruptcy Court, Western District of Tennessee, and a 1970 University of Memphis Law graduate, discussed ethics and professionalism in the legal profession. At the conclusion of his presentation, all 1Ls took an Oath of Professionalism. First-year students and their friends and families were guests at a reception at the Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art. Members of the University of Memphis Law Alumni Chapter, as well as members of the Memphis bench and bar, welcomed the new students to the University and to the city of Memphis. Law classes began Monday, August 17, 2009.
