The Gulf State Region of the American Institute of Architects has given two firms
honors for the renovation of the law school's historic building.

The law school is proud to announce a 100 percent bar pass rate for its February 2011 bar examinees. The state rate (for first-time takers)
was 67 percent.

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2011 University of Memphis Law Review “Best
Note Awards.” The awards, which carry a cash prize and framed certificate, go to
the student authors of the top three published law review notes. This year’s winners:
Meredith Blake Stewart (Best Note) and Eric Setterlund and Jason McQuistion (Best
Note Runners-Up).

Tracy Bradshaw and Grace Whiting recently competed at the ABA National Appellate Advocacy
Competition in Chicago. After winning the Seattle Regional in March, the team went
on to beat both Duke and Charleston at nationals. The team made it to the Sweet Sixteen
round, out of a total of 207 teams. The team is coached by Professor Barbara Kritchevsky.

The University of Memphis School of Law has been named in the top 10 of the "nation's most popular law programs" by U.S. News and World Report.
- Congratulations to several professors and students for their continued commitment
to service at the University of Memphis School of Law and throughout the greater Memphis
community. The following individuals and groups recently were recognized by University
President Dr. Shirley Raines at the University-wide President’s Leadership Recognition
Awards Ceremony:
• Professor Barbara Kritchevsky, Director of Advocacy, received the Dr. William E.
Porter Advisor of the Year Award for her work with the Moot Court Board.
• Professor Chris Zawisza was a finalist for the Dr. William E. Porter Advisor of
the Year Award for her work with the Public Action Law Society.
• 2L Angela Harris was a finalist for the Distinguished Service Award for her considerable
activities in organizing and helping to implement public service projects at the law
school.
• The Public Action Law Society was a finalist for the Excellence in Service Award
for its many activities, particularly the highly successful Alternative Spring Break.
- After finishing third in The American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy,
and Resources (ABA-SEER) Environmental Justice Student Writing Competition, third
year student Nick Christiansen will have his paper published in the symposium issue of the Mississippi Law Journal.
- The Commercial Appeal recently ran an article titled Women of Conviction which reported on an event at which five University of Memphis law students were
honored by the Association of Women Attorneys.
- The University of Memphis School of Law has been named in the top 10 of the "nation's most popular law programs" by U.S. News and World Report.
- Attorney and alumna, Tannera Gibson, is featured in the volunteer attorney spotlight
in the March 2011 issue of Pro Bono News by Memphis Area Legal Services.
- Grace Whiting and Tracy Bradshaw, Memphis Law's 3L ABA NAAC team, went undefeated
to win the Seattle Regional of the American Bar Association's National Appellate Advocacy
Competition, held March 3-5. They will continue on to nationals in Chicago, April
7-9. The team is coached by Professor Barbara Kritchevsky. Congratulations!
- Nick Christiansen, a third-year student at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys
School of Law placed third in The American Bar Association Section of Environment,
Energy, and Resources (ABA-SEER) Environmental Justice Student Writing Competition.
The competition was run in conjunction with a national Environmental Justice Symposium
co-hosted by the ABA-SEER and the University of Mississippi School of Law. Christiansen
will formally receive his award at the national Environmental Justice Symposium to
be held at Ole Miss on Friday, April 1, and his paper will be published on the ABA-SEER
website.
- LaChina Algers, Angela Harris, Chandra Madison, and Joseph McKinney are the 2010-2011
Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial National Champions! Instead of resting over spring break, the team traveled to Houston last week to
compete against the top 18 teams from 6 different regions of the country. They went
undefeated, beating teams from Texas Wesleyan, DePaul, Seattle, St. Mary's and Harvard
on their way to winning the National Championship! This is the first time the school
has ever won a mock trial competition and it is the school's first national championship
in 15 years. The team is coached by Melanie Stovall Murry and Bridgett Stigger. Mock Trial Champs in the Commercial Appeal
- Randall Noel, Bill O'Connor, Lauren Siegel and Jennifer Sutch, Memphis Law's Duberstein
Bankruptcy Law Moot Court Team, placed in the final four of the 2011 competition.
This is the first team to place in the final four after more than 12 years of competing.
The team also won honorable mention - best brief, placing the brief in the top five
of the competition. The team is coached by Mark Wright. Congratulations!

- Five law school students have been chosen to participate in a new program sponsored
by the Tennessee Bar Association, read about it in the Commercial Appeal.
- Estelle Winsett, associate dean for Law Career Services, was interviewed in the Memphis Daily News about her career path that led her to the law school.
- The Public Action Law Society hosted an Alternative Spring Break program March 7-11, 2011. Students from all over the country offered free legal services
to low-income and elderly clients.
- The law school's legal clinic was featured in the University of Memphis Update newsletter.

- Memphis Law's Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Team placed 2nd in the Region and will continue on to Nationals in March. Congratulations
