New Law School Development Director Appointed

Dr. Alleen Deutsch has joined the University of Memphis as director of development for the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Deutsch comes to the U of M from the Georgia State University College of Law, where she served as director of development and alumni relations for more than five years. Prior to her work at Georgia State, Deutsch was a major gifts officer at Florida State University.

Dr. Deutsch has extensive experience in private, independent, and large public universities. Before her work in development, Deutsch served as dean or director of university continuing education outreach programs at Bradley University, Auburn University-Montgomery, and Florida State.

Dean James Smoot comments, "Alleen joins us at an exciting time in the life of the law school as we strive to increase annual giving significantly to enable us to meet growing operational expenses during a time of flat state educational budgets We also will be preparing for a major capital campaign as the law school plans to build a new facility. Alleen was the clear first choice from among a large number of talented applicants."

A graduate of Bowling Green State University, Deutsch earned her master's degree in student personnel services and doctorate in higher education administration from Miami University of Ohio.

Faculty, Staff, and Student Summer News

Third-year law student Vanessa M. Cross was recently awarded a scholarship from the ABA Section of Business Law as a result of her submission to their essay contest. The scholarship was given based on her commitment as a student member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, her desire to represent victims, and her proficiency in trial advocacy. She was also accepted to participate in their Partnership in Advocacy Program.

Third-year law student David Jarrod Holdford recently passed the Patent Bar Examination. He studied for approximately 400 hours in addition to the time he spent in his Patent Law and Information Technology classes at law school.

Assistant Professor Steven J. Mulroy presented an argument before the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals involving two issues of first impression in federal court involving the duress defense and mentally-challenged defendants.

Assistant Dean Charles B. deWitt recently returned from temporary active duty with the Army Reserve JAG with the First Armored Division in Weisbaden, Germany.

U of M Law Alumni Dinner August 19 Will Feature U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr.

Congressman Harold Ford Jr. will be the guest speaker at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law Alumni Chapter's annual dinner Friday, Aug., 19, at the Holiday Inn at the University of Memphis. A reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m.
The theme for the evening is "Striving for Excellence of Law." The Cecil C. Humphreys Teaching Excellence Award and the Alumni Scholarship will be presented at the dinner.
The Holiday Inn is located at 3700 Central Avenue, just across the street from the law school. The cost for the dinner is $65 per person, $500 for a table of eight. For reservations, call 678-3119.

CLASS NOTES

Melinda Plass Jewell ('86) has joined the Memphis firm of Dowden, Songstad, Worley & Reno, PLLC, as Of Counsel. She is a Rule 31 Listed Family Mediator.

Tammy R. Adair ('90) has been appointed President of Direct General Corporation, a Nashville-based financial services holding company. She joined Direct in 2002 as Executive Vice-President after serving for over ten years as a founding partner in a Memphis firm that provided legal services to the insurance and premium finance industries.

Susan M. Clark ('91), with the Memphis firm of Burch, Porter & Johnson, is President of the Memphis Bar Association.

Kevin Snider ('96) recently had his argument on remedies available in consumer fraud cases adopted by the Tennessee Supreme Court. The Court held that consumers can receive both punitive damages under a common law misrepresentation claim and reimbursement for attorney fees under the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act. Snider is the founding attorney of the Germantown, Tennessee, law firm of Snider, Horner & New, PLLC, and is also a Certified Fraud Examiner.

Brett Carter ('98) is currently on active duty with the Army Reserve in Iraq. He recently has been involved with humanitarian missions to local villages. He is an attorney with Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis, PLLC, in Nashville.

Aaron R. Parker ('01), Tracy A. Overstreet ('02), and Jason R. Hollingsworth ('03) have joined the Memphis office of Leitner, Williams, Dooley & Napolitan, PLLC. Founded in 1882, the firm is a defense firm of national reputation.

Jeffrey K. Fleishmann ('02) as of August 8 is with the Chicago firm of Goldberg Kohn. He will concentrate his work in the areas of finance and lending.

Wilson Buntin ('03) has accepted an offer to work in the General Counsel's Office of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. He recently earned his LL.M. in Environmental Law from George Washington University.
