<p style='margin:0in; margin-bottom:1.0E-4pt; font-size:12pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; margin-top:0in; margin-right:0in; margin-left:0in; font-size:12pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; '><span style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Dr. Alleen Deutsch has joined the University of Memphis as director of development for the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Deutsch comes to the U of M from the Georgia State University College of Law, where she served as director of development and alumni relations for more than five years. Prior to her work at Georgia State, Deutsch was a major gifts officer at Florida State University.<br /><br />Dr. Deutsch has extensive experience in private, independent, and large public universities. Before her work in development, Deutsch served as dean or director of university continuing education outreach programs at Bradley University, Auburn University-Montgomery, and Florida State.<br /><br />Dean James Smoot comments, "Alleen joins us at an exciting time in the life of the law school as we strive to increase annual giving significantly to enable us to meet growing operational expenses during a time of flat state educational budgets We also will be preparing for a major capital campaign as the law school plans to build a new facility. Alleen was the clear first choice from among a large number of talented applicants."<br /><br />A graduate of Bowling Green State University, Deutsch earned her master's degree in student personnel services and doctorate in higher education administration from Miami University of Ohio.<br clear="all" /><br clear="all" /></span></p>

Cross</strong> was recently awarded a scholarship from the ABA Section of Business Law as a result of her submission to their essay contest. The scholarship was given based on her commitment as a student member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, her desire to represent victims, and her proficiency in trial advocacy. She was also accepted to participate in their <em>Partnership in Advocacy</em> Program.<br /><br />Third-year law student <strong>David Jarrod Holdford</strong> recently passed the Patent Bar Examination. He studied for approximately 400 hours in addition to the time he spent in his Patent Law and Information Technology classes at law school.<br /><br />Assistant Professor <strong>Steven J. Mulroy</strong> presented an argument before the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals involving two issues of first impression in federal court involving the duress defense and mentally-challenged defendants.<br /><br /> Assistant Dean <strong>Charles B. deWitt</strong> recently returned from temporary active duty with the Army Reserve JAG with the First Armored Division in Weisbaden, Germany.<br /><br clear="all" /><br clear="all" /></span></p>

Humphreys School of Law Alumni Chapter's annual dinner Friday, Aug., 19, at the Holiday Inn at the University of Memphis. A reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m.<br /> The theme for the evening is "Striving for Excellence of Law." The Cecil C. Humphreys Teaching Excellence Award and the Alumni Scholarship will be presented at the dinner.<br />The Holiday Inn is located at 3700 Central Avenue, just across the street from the law school. The Court held that consumers can receive both punitive damages under a common law misrepresentation claim and reimbursement for attorney fees under the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act. Snider is the founding attorney of the Germantown, Tennessee, law firm of Snider, Horner & New, PLLC, and is also a Certified Fraud Examiner.<br /><br /> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Brett Carter</span> ('98) is currently on active duty with the Army Reserve in Iraq. He recently has been involved with humanitarian missions to local villages. He is an attorney with Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis, PLLC, in Nashville.</span></h1>
