Admission to the Bar
Neither admission to the law school nor receipt of a law degree entitles a student to be admitted to the bar. Each state has its own bar registration and admission rules, often requiring, among other things, a character and background fitness investigation and a bar examination. Failure to comply with these rules may foreclose admission or postpone it for a significant period of time. A number of states require that a student register with the state's board of bar examiners at the beginning of law study in order to be eligible to take the bare examination. The responsibility rests with the student to ascertain all state admission requirements and to ensure that all bare requirements are met.
Many states prohibit the practice of law by persons who have been convicted of certain criminal offences or have been involved in activities reflecting adversely on their character, morality, or fitness to practice law. The responsibility to determine whether a student's background will present a problem with respect to the bar admission in any given state rests with that student, who may be well-advised to consult the applicable state's board of bar examiners for advice, or possibly for an advisory opinion.
