What is TIP? The Tennessee Institute for Pre-Law. TIP is a conditional admissions program for college graduates. TIP is a five-week summer program at the University of Memphis School of Law. Selected applicants attend classes and take a final exam in each class. Students who successfully complete the TIP program, based on overall performance, will be admitted to law school the following fall semester.
Who is eligible for TIP? Tennessee residents from diverse backgrounds and circumstances who are capable of successfully participating in the law schools' curricular and co-curricular programs. Border County residents are also eligible.
How do I apply to TIP? The TIP application is incorporated into the application for admission. To be considered for TIP applicants must answer the optional application questions and submit a supplemental statement explaining why you believe you are qualified for the program and how you will bring diversity to the law school entering class. The application deadline is March 1. There is no separate application fee for TIP.
When is the TIP application deadline? March 1
Are Letters of Recommended required? For the University of Memphis School of Law, up to three letters of recommendation are strongly encouraged but are not required.
How many students are selected for the TIP program? Selection for TIP is competitive; approximately 20 students are selected from a pool of over 100 applicants each year.
What are the dates for TIP 2009? The program runs from June 1 - July 2, 2009. Final exams will be given June 29 - July 2, 2009. TIP participants must attend the entire program.
What are the hours for TIP? Typically 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one or two evening classes.
What is the cost? There is no cost to participants for coursework or books.
Is housing available? Housing is available only for non-Shelby County residents in the Richardson Towers double occupancy residence hall, at no charge to participants.
How much is the stipend? Approximately $1,000 - $2,000 total, depending on funding availability. A portion of the stipend is paid every two weeks.
When will TIP admissions decisions be made? Early May
What if I apply to TIP but am accepted into the University of Memphis School of Law? If you are accepted through the regular admissions process, you will not be allowed to attend TIP.
Does successful completion of TIP guarantee a seat in the incoming class? Yes. You will be recommended for either the full-time or part-time law program at the University of Memphis.
What if I am recommended for part-time? If you applied to the University of Memphis School of Law, you will enroll in the part-time program.
What if I do not successfully complete TIP? You will not be admitted to law school. You may reapply to law school in a subsequent year.
What classes are offered during TIP? First-year law classes, which may include Torts, Civil Procedure, Contracts or Property and Legal Methods.
Will the TIP coursework count for credit in law school? No
Can I work or attend summer school during TIP? No. TIP participation requires 100% commitment. Outside employment during TIP will result in termination from the program.
Will applying to TIP hurt my chances of being admitted to law school through the regular admissions process? No.
