Why did you choose your course of study?
The adult education concentration in the EdD program was the perfect match for my
personal and professional interests in adult learning and training programs. I was
able to incorporate the knowledge and skills I learned into both my Navy job (civilian)
and adjunct college teaching position. The varied experiences and backgrounds of other
career professionals in the classes added depth and breadth to the academic program.
How did this degree prepare you or improve your preparation for your current role?
Today I am a more effective facilitator of adult learning. I routinely use the active
and collaborative learning techniques and program planning skills I learned in both
my “jobs”. The adult development theories I learned in the program have become the
core foundation for all my professional planning and teaching. I learned how to engage
and motivate adult learners to become life-long learners and engage in self-development.
What impact has your degree had on your life or career?
Today, I am more self-confident, effective professional as a result of completing
this degree. The program provided just the right amount of academics and experience
coupled with opportunities for self-directed learning. The program reinforced the
necessity for life-long learning for a full and satisfying life. Also, my experiences
at the University of Memphis have made me a much more reflective and introspective
individual. Earning my EdD in Leadership with a concentration in Adult Education has
prepared me to develop a successful personal and professional life.
