What is the EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM?

The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) began at the University of Memphis in 1983. Since its inception, over 600 students have benefited from it.

The Emerging Leaders Program is a comprehensive scholarship program designed to contribute significantly to a balanced, well-rounded college experience. The current scholarship value is $5,500.

Who are Emerging Leaders?

They are active and engaged students who are learning a great deal about themselves and leadership. They come from over 80 different Tennessee and border county high schools, as well as 19 out of state high schools.  They are proud University of Memphis Tigers.

Emerging Leaders have become:

  • Student Government Presidents
  • Executive Directors for Up 'til Dawn fundraising for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
  • Fraternity/Sorority Presidents
  • Associate Justices on Student Court
  • Organization Officers
  • Recruitment Coordinators
  • Resident Assistants
  • Student Activities Council Executive Board Members
  • Orientation Leaders

Emerging Leaders have attained internships with:

  • The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)
  • St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
  • The Memphis Redbirds
  • First South Credit Union
  • Enterprise Rent-a-Car
  • Presidential Campaigns
  • Disney World
  • United States Attorney’s Office
  • Tennessee Legislature
  • Rock the Vote National Headquarters

The Emerging Leaders Program is:

  • Engaging - Emerging Leaders become engaged members of the University of Memphis community resulting in increased satisfaction with the overall student experience.
  • Motivating - Students become involved in activities and/or programs that encourage a strong commitment to excellence in all pursuits.
  • Evolving - Students experience diverse training throughout each year in the program supporting a progressive leadership training model.
  • Resourceful - Emerging leaders have tremendous access to resources to assist with personal and leadership development.
  • Goal-Oriented - Students plan specific leadership goals each semester and work with staff and other students to meet those goals.
  • Innovative - Students attend lectures and workshops that focus on cutting edge approaches to leadership training.
  • Nurturing - Students develop positive relationships with students and staff that aid in their overall personal development.
  • Graded - Students are required to enroll in three leadership courses focusing on leadership theory, communication, and assimilation to the University community.

Program requirements for each semester include:

Freshman Experience

  • Student organization involvement
  • Residence on Leadership Learning floors of residence halls
  • ACAD 1100 (Fall only)
  • Two leadership workshops
  • Speaker series
  • Ten service hours
  • Paired with a Mentor

Sophomore Experience

  • Active campus involvement
  • COMM 3342 (Fall only)
  • Two leadership workshops
  • Group project
  • Speaker series
  • Ten service hours
  • Mentor ELP Freshman

Junior Experience

  • Active campus involvement
  • COMM 3341 (Spring only)
  • Two advanced leadership workshops
  • University related service project as class
  • Speaker series
  • Ten service hours

Senior Experience

  • Active campus involvement
  • Two advanced leadership workshops
  • Community service class project
  • Speaker series
  • Seven service hours
