Three levels of training will be available during the semester: Level I, which is offered for freshmen only and Level II, which is open to any undergraduate that has completed at least one year at the University
of Memphis or completed Level I last semester. For students who do complete Level II, the final level available for the Tiger Leadership Institute, Level III is primarily focused on applying leadership concepts to a variety of roles after
college.
Curriculum length and selection requirements for Level III are similar to Levels I & II; however, applicants must have completed Level II of the Institute to be eligible for this final experience.
Participation will be limited to a maximum of 25 students in each level. An exception to this maximum applies to Level I, which will have 75 students split between three cohorts.
One reason for limiting participation is to make sure that we are offering a high
level of training, and 25 is a very manageable amount for that. The other reason
for that limitation is we want to develop a cohesive, team atmosphere as students
are completing each level of the program.
Level I will offer three cohorts this semester and students will have the option of choosing
between those three available times.
All sessions of the Tiger Leadership Institute meet at the following times:
- Level I - 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm each Tuesday (cohort 1)
- Level I - 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm each Wednesday (cohort 2)
- Level I - 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm each Thursday (Greek Freshmen cohort)
- Level II - 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm each Wednesday
- Level III - 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm each Tuesday (for those who have completed Level II
ONLY)
While completing Level I of the institute, freshman students will expand in the areas of self-awareness and
self-management. Participants will also map a plan for student involvement. Please click on the curriculum link on the right side of this page to see additional
information.
Level II students will concentrate on learning how to be more effective as leaders within
their organizations. For this, we will discuss team development, power and authority,
conflict and change management, and several other topics. Please click on the curriculum link on the right side of this page to see additional
information.
The Office of Student Leadership & Involvement wants all graduates to be thoroughly
prepared for leadership in their communities once they have completed their degrees
so Level III concentrates on methods for engaging in positive social change, professional team
environments, and continued leadership identity development.
Throughout all levels of the Tiger Leadership Institute, participants will have an
opportunity to meet campus and community leaders and develop strong bonds with like-minded,
involved students. Graduates of all levels will also be provided with a certificate by the Office of
Student Leadership and Involvement to recognize their commitment to leadership learning
and growth. Additionally, the department will provide supporting evidence of completion, as
needed by graduates (i.e. confirmation with a potential employer).
