Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 12:00 Noon - 1:00 pm: University of Memphis University Center Theatre: "African American Life During the Civil War...In Story!" by Dylan Pritchett.  Since 1990, Mr. Pritchett has been a full-time storyteller and currently residing in Williamsburg, Virginia.  He annually visits an average of 100 schools, libraries, museums, festivals, conferences and other educational institutions.  Dylan Pritchett's unique storytelling style promises to be entertaining.  Books by this author include "The First Music" (children's picture book) by Dylan Pritchett, August House Publishers.

Sisk is a former advertising CEO who spent the last ten years working with homeless people.  He is the Founder of the Quality Foods for Everyone- Program designed to bring quality foods into homeless shelters in partnership with Whole Foods.

Saturday, April 9, 2011, 10:00 am- 1:00 pm: Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Avenue.  Louisa May Alcott Family Day.  Children and their families will explore Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and her other books for children through the lens of the nineteenth-century art at the Dixon.

Please note:  Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women is a documentary film co-produced by Nancy Porter Productions, Inc. and Thirteen/WNET New York’s American Masters, and a biography of the same name written by Harriet Reisen. Louisa May Alcott programs in libraries are sponsored by the American Library Association Public Programs Office with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

University of Memphis: Know Your Neighborhood, Part Three- 1912.  As the University of Memphis begins its celebration of its 100th birthday, city historian Jimmy Ogle presents the districts surrounding the University of Memphis: Red Acres, University Area, Joffre, East Buntyn, Messick-Buntyn and Normal Station, along with remarks about Highland Street from Poplar to Park Avenue.

Wednesday, September 21, 2011, 12:00 Noon & 1:30 pm, Administration Building, South entrance. Know Your Neighborhood, Part Four, Tours with Jimmy Ogle. Ogle continues the Cenntennial history of The University of Memphis' surrounding six neighborhood districts. The University of Memphis Main Campus is surrounded by six distinct neighborhood districts, most of which pre-date the 1912 opening of the institution.  Part Four of the continuing series will be walking tours of the perimeter areas of the campus.  All walking tours are weather permitting, handicapped accessible and on the sidewalks of the campus and neighborhoods.

Walking Tour "Normal" will assemble at 12:00 Noon at the south entry to the Administration Building.

Walking Tour "U of M" will assemble at 1:30 pm at the south entry of the Administration Building.

Monday, Sept. 27 through Friday, October 1, 2010, 11:30 am- , McWherter Library Rotunda: The American Library Association has identified the week of Sept. 27 – Oct. 1 as Banned Books Week 2010, the week in which libraries and other organizations celebrate the precious freedom to read. Apropos of Banned Books Week the University Libraries hosts 30-minute public readings from banned or challenged books in the McWherter Library rotunda beginning each day, Monday through Friday, at 11:30 a.m. and continuing through the last reading of the day.

May 19, 12 noon – 1:  Fate or Coincidence?:  Memphis author, Mr. Harry Samuels, will discuss his two books, Beshert: True Stories of Connections and its sequel, Crossroads: Chance or Destiny?  Both books are collections of  intriguing, unexpected, and memorable personal experiences in addition to those of his family and friends. Spanning half a century, these true stories raise questions about the design of the universe and the way we fit into it. They exemplify the concept of synchronicity, which suggests purpose in our life experiences.

April 19-22, Opening to closing, daily, McWherter Library rotunda:  Faculty Scholarship Week display.  A selection of the scholarly and creative productivity of University of Memphis faculty will be on display in the Ned R. McWherter Library rotunda from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily during the four-day period.  The display will be moved on the morning of Friday, April 23 to the Cecil C. Humphrey’s Law School on Front Street in downtown Memphis where the display will continue during Faculty Convocation 2010.

April 5-16, Opening to closing, daily, McWherter Library rotunda:  Yu Exhibition:  display of ancient Chinese artifacts.

March 22 - April 12, the University Libraries surveyed students, faculty and staff to gather information on their perception of services offered by the Libraries. Participants could select to include their email address to  be eligible to enter a drawing. All surveys were anonymous and the email addresses were separated from the survey. A traveling exhibition in selected America's libraries sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association featuring six large panels of illustrative material on the involvement of blacks in baseball from the mid-19th century to the present in America to be mounted in the Ned R. McWherter Library, University of Memphis. The exhibit is taken from the permanent collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York and travel and logistics are arranged by the American Library Association. Specific programming accompanying the exhibition, which will emphasize the experience of Memphis African-Americans in baseball (e. g., the Memphis Red Sox), will also be displayed.
