New Student Employee Orientation Checklist
The following checklist can be helpful in orienting new students to a particular
department. In some capacities the students meet and serve the Library users, but
regardless of the particular job assignment, all student employees represent the Libraries.
Supervisors should make every effort to see that all components of the list are covered
with the student. When completed, place the form in the departmental student employee
file for future reference.
__________Note student's campus & home address, phone numbers.
__________General expectations of job; work schedules; absences, guidelines for work
evaluation and job termination
__________Explain department function, tour area, purpose of their job
__________ Introduce to staff in department
__________ Locate restrooms, first-aid supplies, fire exits & extinguishers, staff
lounge, vending machines
__________ Explain policies & forms for time sheets; deadlines for signing them;
pay checks and where to pick them up
__________ Policies for breaks, eating, dress, etc.
__________ Proper use of telephone, greetings (if on public desk), etc.
__________ Job benefits: work references, Library skills
__________ Individuals to report to, phone numbers to call if sick, absent, etc.
__________ Training of equipment used in job (if needed)
__________ Training on job duties
__________ Reporting emergency situations; Give name & phone number of emergency contact person
__________ Completion of Library and/or University orientation program
