Ken Berryhill (MA) attended the Nashville Film Festival, where he reconnected with actress Patricia Neal. Berryhill assisted in the production of Neal’s 1957 movie A Face in the Crowd. A character in the film was based on Berryhill, who was a television producer and director at the time. He also answered questions about a documentary on his radio and television career, Turn Your Radio On.
Don Hutson (BBA) was elected chair of the board of Executive Books. He is a prolific speaker and CEO of U.S. Learning.

Bernice Donald (BA, JD ’79), U.S. District Court judge, received the inaugural Liberty Achievement Award from the American Bar Association’s tort and trial practice section. The award honors attorneys and judges who actively promote diversity within the legal community.
Nicholas L. Johnson (BS), NASA chief scientist for orbital debris, received NASA’s highest civil servant award, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Department of Defense’s Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his work in resolving the threat of an uncontrolled U.S. satellite to people on Earth. Johnson made critical contributions to the successful interception of a non-functional DOD satellite in February.
Larry Moore (MA), associate professor of business law at the U of M, premiered his digital film Somerville at the FedEx Institute of Technology. Moore is interviewed frequently by the media on politics and society, including an interview with the BBC on the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His black history game, “Black Progress,” was exhibited at the FedEx Diversity Program.
John A. Noland (JD) was named by Florida Super Lawyers as a top lawyer in Florida for 2008. He is chair of the commercial litigation division at Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt and general counsel to several corporate clients.
Berje K. Yacoubian (BA), owner of Yacoubian Research, was named Rotarian of the Year by the Memphis Rotary Club.

Carolyn Helm Gates (BA) received the 2008 Women of Achievement award in the category of steadfastness. Gates has been a community activist and served on the Shelby County Board of Commissioners for 18 years. Her first book, Thursday’s Child, was published in July.

Mark Askew (BSCE), president of Askew Hargraves Harcourt & Associates, received a presidential citation from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee.
Gayle S. Rose (BFA) was one of five individuals to receive the Humanitarian Award from Diversity Memphis.
1978
Chuck Jensen (BA) was named vice president of travel account management for iSeatz, a provider of customized travel and entertainment solutions. Before joining iSeatz, he held several leadership positions at Delta Air Lines, most recently as general manager of delta.com.

Mona Newsome Wicks (AN, BSN ’81), associate dean for research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing, was named a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow. Her leadership projects include working with the UTHSC Clinical and Translational Science Center with the goal of improving health in diverse populations.

John A. Good (BBA, JD ’87), an attorney with Bass, Berry & Sims, was selected for inclusion in Mid-South Super Lawyers in the areas of securities and corporate finance.
Danny W. Kail (BA, JD ’83) is teaching a graduate level course in employment law for Webster University of St. Louis this fall. He has taught graduate level courses in labor relations, diversity in a global workplace and business ethics. Kail has been a licensed attorney since 1984 and represented various labor unions until being appointed chief negotiator for Shelby County by then-Mayor Bill Morris in 1992. Since that time, he has been reappointed four times to various administrative and labor relations-related positions in Shelby County. In addition to teaching at Webster, Kail has taught in the Accelerated Degree Program at LeMoyne-Owen College since 2003.

Ralph Thompson Jr. (BBA) was promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Kathleen Woodruff Wickham (MA, EdD ’99) received the David L. Eshelman Outstanding Chapter Adviser Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. She is adviser to the SPJ student chapter at the University of Mississippi, which was named Outstanding Student Chapter for Region 12 in four of the last five years, including 2008. Wickham is an associate professor of journalism at Ole Miss and serves as director of the department’s graduate studies program.

Dr. Kennard Brown (BA, JD ’98, MPA ’01) earned a PhD from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in May, one of two African-Americans ever to receive a doctoral degree from the Health Outcomes and Policy Research Division of the College of Pharmacy. He is chief of staff and executive vice chancellor at UTHSC, and is principal aide to the chancellor.
Tonna Bruce (MBA) joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as administrative director in the Academic Affairs office.
Elizabeth T. Collins (JD), a partner at Thomason, Hendrix, Harvey, Johnson & Mitchell, is serving on the board of directors of the Memphis Bar Association and as a litigation section representative and chair of the wellness committee.

Carol King-Chipman (BME ’87, MM ’89, DMA ’96) is director of bands at Shadowlawn Middle School. The Shadowlawn Band won the 2007-08 Tennessee Bandmasters Sweepstakes Award.
