The Holiday Inn at the University of Memphis has earned the InterContinental Hotels
Group Torchbearer Award for the seventh consecutive year as one of the best Holiday
Inn hotels in the worldwide chain. It won that distinction by achieving the highest
levels of excellence in all aspects of operation and customer satisfaction.
In 2003, the hotel was also awarded the Newcomer of the Year Award.

“We do not take this award for granted,” said Tom Johnson, managing partner of the
U of M hotel. “Don’t get me wrong, we’re proud of the honor, but we know it’s earned
every day, little by little. Everything counts. I mean everything — every check-in,
every meal, each maintenance or upgrade project and every satisfied customer. Good
economy or bad economy, everything counts.”
The Torchbearer Awards were presented Oct. 20 in Las Vegas at a special ceremony during
the InterContinental Hotels Group Americas Investor and Leadership Conference, which
was attended by more than 4,000 owners, operators and corporate executives.
