U of M’s influence:
“The University experience opened my mind to exciting new knowledge about human institutions,
values and problems. It helped me develop a lifelong desire to learn more and live
according to higher standards. I am especially appreciative of the wise and well-educated
professors who were excellent role models.”
U of M’s legacy:
“The U of M has provided an opportunity for many people, like myself, who were not
as affluent, but ambitious, to obtain a great education. For those willing to apply
themselves, it opens the door to a better life.”
Giving back to the Memphis community:
“As a history professor at the U of M for 46 years, I have been privileged to influence
thousands of students. I especially enjoyed being faculty adviser for Omicron Delta
Kappa, a national campus leadership society, from 1967 through 2011 and worked with
the very best student leaders. My research on the history of the University has been
shared both on campus and in the community, where I have often given presentations
on historical topics to civic and social groups.”
