Selecting the U of M:
“It offered an educational opportunity in my area of interest. The University was
relatively close to home, so I would be able to get back and forth from home in Atlanta
to Memphis without much difficulty.”
Giving back to the Memphis community:
“I give back to the U of M as well as the community through my outreach initiatives.
As the coordinator of the Community Outreach Lab in the Department of Psychology,
I assist University students as they work with community stakeholders in efforts to
prevent youth, especially at-risk youth, from engaging in a host of health and life-compromising
behaviors, like drinking, using drugs, sexual activity at a young age or dropping
out of school. I also give back through Memphis STEPS, a campus-based suicide prevention
initiative. As part of this initiative, I also conduct workshops and other educational
efforts on suicide prevention for the general community.”
Future of U of M:
“I think the future is very bright for the U of M. The University has established
itself as an urban institution of higher education, and the emphasis on research and
scholarship will keep it positioned as a viable institution of higher education.”
