Arts & Sciences Graduates from the political science and biology departments celebrated Back to School
Nights with the College of Arts & Sciences Alumni Chapter in April and June. Join
the Chapter for the 2009 Outstanding Alumni Awards Dinner Thursday, Oct. 1, at The
Racquet Club of Memphis to celebrate distinguished graduates and friends of the College.
The chapter will present the Outstanding Alumni Award to James Morse (BS ’90, MS ‘93),
Keith Prewitt (BA ’81), Thomas Appleton (BA ’71) and Meah King (BA ’02, MAT ’05).
Maurice Elliott will be honored as Outstanding Friend of the College.
Band The chapter will host the 2009 Bandmasters Championship Saturday, Oct. 31, at Liberty

Business & Economics The chapter hosted a summer golf tournament in June. Trivia about the College entertained
and educated the group of more than 100 golfers throughout the golf scramble, which
was held at Galloway Golf Course. In October, the 17th annual Alumni Day luncheon
at the University Holiday Inn will celebrate accomplished alumni and friends of the

Education The chapter welcomed Dr. Donald Wagner as dean of the College of Education with a
reception in June. Alumni from the College gathered for the reception and also discussed
ideas and plans for the Alumni Chapter. In July, College of Education alumni met in
the Alumni Center to help restart the chapter, discussing plans for the selection
of the College of Education Alumni Chapter Scholarship recipient and the selection
process for the Outstanding Educator of the Year.
Half Century The Half Century Club is planning the celebration for the 50th anniversary of the
Class of 1959 Friday, Oct. 9. Members are invited to a brunch at the home of U of
M President Shirley Raines. A Golden Reception will be held for the Class of 1959
and all previous graduation years at the Alumni Center on the evening of Friday, Oct.
9. Complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Journalism The club will host its Outstanding Journalism Alumni Awards Dinner Thursday, Nov.
5, at The Racquet Club of Memphis. More details will follow.
Law The chapter will host the annual Judicial Reception Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the home of
President Shirley Raines. Honored guests will include members of the Supreme Court
of Tennessee, the federal, state and local judiciary and recent graduates of the Cecil
C. Humphreys School of Law. The chapter, in collaboration with the School of Law,
is hosting the Grand Opening Celebration of its newly renovated building Jan. 16,
2010. The event will take place throughout the entire building and will feature performers
from the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Gourmet food and beverage stations will
offer the “Best of Memphis” small plates from local restaurants. Law school students
will conduct building tours and will be honored with a late-night gathering after
the event. Classes scheduled to have reunions in 2009 and 2010 are encouraged to attend
as a group. Classes with graduation years ending in 4, 5, 9 and 0 are also encouraged

Luther C. McClellan The chapter will host its inaugural Reunion Weekend during this year’s Homecoming
celebration. The weekend will begin with the Homecoming Stepshow, featuring stepping
skills of current students and returning alumni, Friday, Oct. 9, in the Rose Theatre.
Proceeds will benefit the LCM Scholarship Fund. On game day, Saturday, Oct. 10, LCM
will host a tailgate party in Tobey Park.
MPA The newly launched Master of Public Administration Alumni Club inducted members of
the Pi Alpha Alpha honor society in April at its kickoff luncheon at the Fogelman
Executive Center.
Music The Music Society is planning an October reception prior to a performance at the Rudi
E. Scheidt School of Music. Alumni and guests will be invited to a complimentary wine
and cheese reception where they will have a chance to mingle with faculty, staff and
performers.
Nursing The chapter honored Jan Young (BSN ’83) and Mary Hammons (BSN ’80, MSN ’06) at its
second annual Outstanding Nursing Awards luncheon in May at the Fogelman Executive

Theatre & Dance The club hosted a freshmen luncheon in August in the Big Red Theatre. New students
mingled with faculty, staff and alumni after their formal orientation program held

UMAR The University of Memphis Association of Retirees hosted several events during the
spring and summer, including a Mix and Match event, an annual picnic and wine tasting.
The group is looking forward to many interesting fall activities, including a newly
established book club, coffee and conversation at the home of U of M President Shirley
Raines and the annual holiday party.
Young Alumni The Young Alumni Committee will host its third annual TRUE BLUE 5K on the night of
Friday, Oct. 23. The race course winds through the U of M campus and ends with fun,
food and music at an awards ceremony. Race proceeds benefit the Young Alumni Committee
Scholarship.
Atlanta Dr. Rajiv Grover, dean of the Fogelman College of Business & Economics, visited Atlanta
this spring for a reception at the home of alums Jackie (BSN ’88) and Ron (BBA ’81,
MBA ’83) Hart. Members of the Atlanta Alumni Club were in attendance to meet the dean
and fellow alumni and friends.
Boston/New England The club hosted a summer picnic at the home of club president Bob Canfield (BBA ’59).
Alumni and friends gathered to enjoy food and fellowship in anticipation of the upcoming
football season.
Houston The club will be hosting a Tiger Tailgate Saturday, Nov. 21. Details about the event
will be posted on the Houston Alumni Club Web site and through E-News.
Nashville After the second annual Nashville Tiger Golf Classic in August, the Nashville Alumni
Club hosted golfers, alumni, friends and family for its annual summer picnic. The
golf scramble, silent auction and luncheon were held at Gaylord Springs Golf Links.
The club is looking forward to a pre-game tailgate when the Tigers play in Murfreesboro.
Join the club Saturday, Sept. 12, before the Tigers take on MTSU.
St. Louis The club will be ready to cheer on Tiger basketball Tuesday, Nov. 17, when Memphis
takes on Kansas in St. Louis. Upcoming editions of E-News will provide pre-game event
information.
Tampa/Orlando The Tampa/Orlando Alumni Club will host a pre-game gathering Saturday, Oct. 3, before
the Tigers take on the University of Central Florida. Information will be on the Tampa/Orlando
Alumni Club Web site and in E-News.
