Oldest alumna passes away

Mamie Girdner Watson

The University’s oldest known living alumna, Mamie Girdner Watson, passed away at age 100 on Aug. 12. She graduated with honors from then-West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1932 with majors in Latin, mathematics and music. She taught English, Latin and music at Earle High School in Arkansas for more than 35 years. She was buried in the Tiger Blue dress that she wore when she was honored as Oldest Alumna in 2009. The U of M extends condolences to the family.
