Harry Woodbury (BS) of Jackson, Tenn., received a 2000 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Memphis chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. He served as Memphis public service director and is a former development director at The U of M.

Carolyn Hays (BS, MEd '70) was named Citizen of the Year by the Memphis and Shelby County Optimist Respect for Law Committee. She is retired after teaching for 30 years in the Memphis City Schools.

Pat (BA) and Joel Duskin (BS '61) live in Ft. Worth, Texas. Joel is an elementary school band director with the Dallas Public Schools and plays French horn in the Irving Symphonic Band. Pat is an administrative secretary for the dean of instruction at Tarrant County College. They have been married for 41 years.

Stanley Booth (BA), an award-winning writer and photographer, is working on biographies of musicians Gram Parsons and Johnny Mercer. His first two books, The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones and Rhythm Oil: A Journey through the Music of the American South, were republished last year. Booth lives in his boyhood home on the South Georgia coast.

Charles Ballard (BS) is associate pastor of First Baptist Church in Maryville, Tenn. He previously served churches in Florida, Georgia and Virginia.

James Kenneth Newman (MEd, MA '87, EdD '94) retired from the Jackson Madison County School System after 38 years of service. He is now an assistant professor of education at Union University in Jackson.

Donna S. Shannon (BS, MA '70) is president of Network, a professional women's organization. She received the 2000 Vision Award from Women of Achievement, was named one of "50 Women Who Make a Difference" by Memphis Woman magazine, and won the 2000 Wilson Learning Worldwide Pacesetter Award.

David Van Hoozer (BS) former president and general manager of CE Thompson Lumber, has purchased American Laser of Memphis. The company refurbishes ink and toner cartridges for printers, faxes and copiers and repairs laser jet printers and copiers.

Bob Rutman (BSEd) is principal of Ticasuk Brown Elementary School in Fairbanks, Alaska, and a doctoral candidate at the University of New Mexico. He and his wife Velma have three sons-Jason, Adam and Josh.

Robert M. Bucella (BA) recently retired as a detective sergeant from the West Orange, N.J., Police Department after 25 years of service. He has moved to south Florida, where he is working as a professional photographer.

B.C. DeSpain (EdD) has been named dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Diane Thomas (BS) has been elected president of the Orange County, Calif., chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. She is manager of media relations for the county.

Dr. Thomas H. Appleton Jr. (BA) has contributed to the book Negotiating the Boundaries of Southern Womanhood: Dealing with the Powers That Be. He is a history professor at Eastern Kentucky University.

Robert Daniel (BS) is a program manager for Raytheon over the Commercial Remote Sensing System, a one-meter imaging satellite system.

Bill Enneis (BSEd) of Alachua, Fla., is a physical education teacher at Lake Butler Elementary School. He was chosen 1999 Teacher of the Year for the Union County School District.

Tom A. Wright (BSEd), president and CEO of Enterprise National Bank, was named chairman of the board of trustees for Southern College of Optometry.

Harriet Alexander (MA) was named by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, as one of the 2000 Outstanding Writers of the 20th Century. Her biography will appear in a book of the same name. Alexander is a reference librarian at The U of M.

Janice C. HarderDr. Janice C. Harder (MEd, EdD '84) is serving as 2000-2001 president of the National Business Education Association. She is a professor of business at Motlow State Community College in Lynchburg, Tenn.

 

Joe Harold Waldon (MEd) has been named assistant superintendent of business services for the Shelby County Schools.

Michael E. Oakes (BSCE), a member of the Shelby County engineer's office since 1993, has been appointed county engineer. Oakes was a construction and engineering project manager, facility manager and planner with the Navy from 1976-92.

James B. Mitchell Jr. (MEd, EdD '89), superintendent of Shelby County Schools, was named Tennessee Superintendent of the Year. He was honored by the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents at a banquet in Gatlinburg. Mitchell is the first Shelby County superintendent to receive the honor.

Elizabeth Drewry (MA) is vice president of human resources for KnightRidder.com, a local information and Web services company. She had been senior vice president of human resources for the Los Angeles Times since 1997.

Larry Finch (BSEd), former Tiger head basketball coach, is vice president of player personnel and assistant coach for the Memphis Houn'Dawgs of the ABA 2000 pro basketball league.

David Williams (BA) earned an MBA from the University of Colorado. He founded the Williams Company, a private consulting firm specializing in public relations, marketing, planning and community development.

Rebecca Ballou (BA, JD '80) has joined the law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell. She concentrates her practice in the areas of corporate, securities and mergers and acquisitions.

Beverly D. Fisher (BA) is an attorney in private practice in Nashville, handling family law, Social Security disability and probate cases. She is the author of Dissolution of Marriage: A Guide for Paralegals, which is distributed at Southeastern Paralegal Institute.

Lynn Newsom (MEd), personnel director for the city of Jackson, Tenn., received the designation of Certified Professional from the International Personnel Management Association.

Frank Borst (EdD) was named Graduate Professor of the Year by the St. Ambrose University Graduate Student Government Association. He is associate director of MBA programs, managing director of the MBA in health care program and a professor of business administration and economics at St. Ambrose. Borst advises MBA students and teaches graduate courses in marketing management and entrepreneurship.

Jim Browne (BS, MS '83), former director of horticulture for Memphis Botanic Gardens, is general manager of the Botanical Garden of Nevis in the West Indies.

Austin Byrd (BA, JD '97) is an associate with the law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs.

William L. Akey (BA, MS '82, EdS '87) has been promoted to assistant vice provost for enrollment services at The U of M. Akey, who has been with the University for 16 years, oversees operations for undergraduate admissions, adult student development, enrollment services, registration and records, financial aid, and student relations and orientation services.

Malcolm "Mac" Hawkins (BSEd, MEd '92), a former teacher at Bartlett High School, is assistant principal at Millington High School.

Peggy Sonnenburg Griffin (BBA) is a manufacturers' representative for Outdoor Recreation Inc., covering the West Tennessee/North Mississippi market. She has helped design many playgrounds in the Memphis area, including P.D. Parrot's at AutoZone Park and Tom Sawyer Island at Libertyland.

Russell FowlerRussell Fowler (BA, JD '87) has written an article titled "Calvin Coolidge and the Supreme Court" for the Journal of Supreme Court History. He has published numerous articles on legal history in The West Tennessee Historical Society Papers and in The Encyclopedia of Tennessee History & Culture. Fowler is managing attorney for Southeast Tennessee Legal Services, an adjunct professor of political science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and president of the Community Housing Resource Board.

Karen C. Burks (BBA) has been promoted to area director of human resources for HealthSouth Rehabilitation Corp., with responsibility for more than 40 hospitals. She is also a mediator for the Memphis district of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Burks is 2000-2001 president of the Tennessee Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration.

Melinda Parker (MEd) of Henderson, Tenn., was a finalist for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. She is the computer skills teacher and head of the CRICKIT Lab at Chester County Middle School.

Brian Shanaghan (BBA) is a tax manager with KLA-Tencor Corp. of San Jose, Calif. He also teaches in Golden Gate University's master of taxation program and speaks at symposiums for tax professionals.

Mark Sistrunk (BSET) and Missy Melvin Sistrunk (BA '88) live in Tulsa, Okla., where Mark is an electrical engineer with Kimberly-Clark Corp. They have two children, Kelsey and Hunter.

Brian Gaston (BFA) has been nominated for the B. Iden Payne Award for outstanding director of a play for youth. He is managing artistic director for Second Youth Repertory Family Theatre and general manager/producer for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Austin, Texas.

James R. Mulroy II (MBA) is a partner with the law firm of Lewis Fisher Henderson and Claxton LLP. He had been chief litigator for FedEx's employment litigation group.

Daniel E. Smith (BA) has been promoted to stage 2 medical sales representative with Searle Pharmaceuticals/Pharmacia. He is married to Amy Lynn Smith of Carthage, Tenn.

Kimberley Bell Tupy (BBA) and James Tupy are the parents of Joshua Ryan Tupy, born July 14. They live in Hamilton, Ohio.

Lt. Cmdr. Armand Quattlebaum (BSEE) received a master of engineering degree with a concentration in construction management from the University of Maryland. He is stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, where he is facilities planning officer for Public Works Center Yokosuka.

T. Mark Stelling (BBA) and Kellye Hendershot Stelling (BBA '90) announce the birth of daughter Molly Christine, on Feb. 2, 2000. They are also the parents of Allison, Madeline and Garrett. Mark is vice president of McDonnell Insurance.

Donna Davis (BA) is weeknight news co-anchor for WMC-TV. She had been a reporter and weekend anchor at a Fox owned-and-operated station in Cleveland, Ohio.

Samantha D. Holmes (BS) is a research psychologist for DecisionQuest Inc., a trial research and consulting firm. She earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Michigan and now lives in Kingwood, Texas.

Dwight Vick (MAP) is an assistant professor at Troy State University's Pacific campus in Okinawa, Japan.

Rick Vollmer (MBA) has joined Commercial Bank and Trust Co. Previously he was vice president and portfolio manager at AmSouth Bank.

Stephanie Watson (BA) has returned to United Way as area manager for Carroll, Henderson and Weakley counties. She lives in Lexington, Tenn.

Carol Cobb McCormackCarol Cobb McCormack (BPS) has been named director of human resources for the Memphis office of iXL, an e-commerce consulting company. She is responsible for human resource administration, employee and community relations and media relations. Before joining iXL, McCormack was managing director of Helix Consulting Partners.

 

Darrel SumnerDarrel Sumner (BA) was honored for outstanding sales performance by New England Financial, a Boston-based financial services company. A recent graduate of the company's Career School, Sumner received the Commodore's Cup. He is associated with Strategic Financial Partners, the company's Memphis affiliate.

Randal S. Mitchell (MA) is a correctional treatment specialist at the Federal Correctional Complex in Beaumont, Texas. He lives in Groves, Texas.

Robin A. Stone (BA, MS '97) is the academic counselor and associate director of student services for the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is also chair of the college's student academic affairs committee and assistant director of the UNCC freshman seminar program.

Robin Chambers (BBA) is branch executive director of the Mason YMCA. Before joining the Mason branch, she was associate director of the Davis YMCA.

Evan C. East (BSEd) has been promoted to the rank of Air Force captain. He is plans and readiness branch chief with the Headquarters Air Education and Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Tina Gaffney Robbins (BA) had her third child, Matthew Winston Robbins, on Dec. 27.

Mitchell G. Wrenn (BPS) is an assistant public defender in Daytona Beach, Fla. He graduated from Florida Coastal School of Law in 1999.

Rachel Gray Beaver (BSN) received the $2,500 Nurses Scholarship and Fellowship Award from Nurses Educational Funds Inc. She is a master's student in the nurse anesthesia program at the University of Pittsburgh.

Lt. j.g. Gilbert Gay (BSET) and Janette Leath Gay (BA '97) welcomed the birth of their first child, Hannah Jane Gay, on Aug. 24. They live in Jacksonville, Fla. Gilbert is stationed at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, where he is in flight training.

Kristin Frey Glaeske (BA) received a master's degree in secondary education from Vanderbilt University. An English teacher at Hunters Lane High School, Glaeske lives in Nashville with her husband Aaron.

Alex Kozelle (BFA) is a graphic designer with Veridian Design Group in Atlanta.

Brooks Monaghan (BBA) is head coach of The U of M women's soccer team. A former Tiger goalkeeper, he had been the Lady Tigers' interim head coach.

Lt. j.g. Andre J. Stridiron III (BA) is a naval flight officer with Sea Control Squadron 33 aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis.
