Professor & Associate Dean for Faculty and Administration, Department of Management
Thomas R. Miller joined the management faculty of the University of Memphis in 1971. He had previously served on the faculty at Ohio Dominican College and worked in student affairs at The Ohio State University.
Dr. Miller earned a B.A. in mathematics (1966), an M.B.A. (1968), and a Ph.D. (1972) in business administration from The Ohio State University. His academic and professional interests include general management and organization theory, management history, human resource management, management ethics, and case research and writing.
In addition to faculty responsibilities in teaching, research, and service, Dr. Miller has held several administrative positions at the UofM including Chair of the Department of Management, Associate Dean and Director of Graduate Programs, and Director of Professional Development Programs in the Fogelman College.
An active contributor to professional associations, Dr. Miller has authored or co-authored over 100 academic and professional papers. His work has appeared in many management and business journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Case Research Journal, Southeast Case Research Journal, and SAM Advanced Management Journal. He previously was Associate Editor of the Case Research Journal and currently serves on its editorial board. He is a member of the North American Case Research Association and the Southeast Case Research Association.
Dr. Miller is a consultant to business, government, and non-profit organizations in the areas of organization studies, human resource management, compensation, and management training.
In recognition of his contributions to the North American Case Research Association (NACRA), Dr. Miller was inducted into the Society of NACRA Outstanding Fellows in November 2003. Also in the same year, he was awarded a Suzanne Downs Palmer Professorship for service contributions to the Fogelman College. In March 2013, Dr. Miller was honored to be appointed the Morgan Morton Professor for Exemplary Leadership. The Southeast Case Research Association (SECRA) named him a SECRA Fellow in February 2017.
