University of Memphis students, faculty and staff, and the wider Memphis community
are invited to celebrate the planet at the University of Memphis Earth Day event Thursday,
April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festivities will take place at the TIGUrS Urban
Garden, which is located directly behind the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The rain location
for the “zero waste” event will be the Michael D. Rose Theatre lobby.
Those attending the Earth Day celebration will have the chance to browse information
tables featuring sustainability initiatives by organizations both on and off campus.
They also can get an “up close and personal” view of the TIGUrS Garden and participate
in the planting of summer crops.
There will be Zumba demonstrations, a farmer’s market, live music from local artists
and prize giveaways, including a bicycle and recycling bins. A butterfly release will
take place at noon; anyone who is interested may release a butterfly. A free lunch
will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
