Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., son of the late U.S. attorney general, will be the commencement
speaker for the May 2013 graduating class of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law
at the University of Memphis. The commencement ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday,
May 12, in the Cannon Center in downtown Memphis.
Kennedy is a visionary environmental business leader, lawyer and advocate. A professor
of environmental law at Pace University School of Law, he also serves as co-director
of the school’s Environmental Litigation Clinic. He is senior attorney for the Natural
Resources Defense Council and chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper.
He is also president-at-large of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a partner on the CleanTech
investment team of Silicon Valley’s VantagePoint Capital Ventures, the environmental
advisor to Napo Pharmaceuticals, and a member of the board of directors of Westinghouse
“Having a speaker of Robert Kennedy Jr.’s caliber and reputation speak at our graduation
is a tremendously exciting occasion,” said Interim Dean William P. Kratzke. “We are
hopeful that his visit and his speech will inspire and motivate our students to achieve
the many things we know them to be capable of after law school.”
The Class of 2013 invited Kennedy to speak due in part to his history of public service
and passion for environmental law, both of which resonate with the U of M law school
student body. The students in this year’s class have demonstrated a commitment to
use their abilities for public service, with several receiving statewide awards and
founding nationally recognized non-profits on their own.
This year’s law school graduation is sponsored by Memphis-based investment firm Duncan-Williams.
The Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is fully accredited by the American Bar Association
and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools, the most important society
for legal education in the United States. Graduates of the Cecil C. Humphreys School
of Law include judges, other public servants, and leading practitioners in the Mid-South
and throughout the nation.
