Ellen Watson has been appointed on an interim basis to serve as vice president for
Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at the University of Memphis
beginning July 26th . She succeeds Dr. Douglas Hurley, who retires this month after eight years in the
position.
Watson, associate VP for Information Technology and Deputy Chief Information Officer,
joined the U of M’s IT staff in July 2008. She had previously served in IT leadership
roles at St. Louis University and Loyola University in Chicago, and in IT and library
leadership roles at Indiana State University and Bradley University.
In welcoming Watson, U of M President Shirley Raines also noted Hurley’s contributions
to the University. “He has been an outstanding information officer,” she said. “He
brought to this campus valuable expertise from private industry as well as academia,
and he led the University successfully through many changes and improvements to its
technological capabilities. We are also indebted to him for his chairmanship of the
FedEx Institute the past five years.”
Watson said she intends to continue Hurley’s efforts on behalf of information technology
at the University of Memphis. “Dr. Hurley developed a strong IT organization here,”
she said, “including a knowledgeable and respected IT staff that provides stable and
secure services for all its users, and a vision to make ITD a valuable strategic partner
for the University.”
