March 21, 2014 - The Graduate Student Association at the University of Memphis is
working to spread awareness of Memphis refugees and raise donations to assist them.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to an awareness event April 3 from noon to
2 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. The event will feature live music, food,
a sale of jewelry made by refugees, refugee speakers and presentations.
The donation drive is running now through April 3. From March 23 to 29 the drive will
focus on items for babies and children, including clothes, cribs, toys, playpens,
diapers, bottles and bibs. From March 30 to April 3 the emphasis will be on household
items, including kitchen utensils, furniture, cleaning supplies, alarm clocks, pillows,
blankets, appliances, lamps and rugs. Schools supplies, such as pens, notebooks, backpacks
and calculators, also are being accepted.
Cash donations are welcome as well. Bring all donations to the Administration Building,
room 214 or 215.
All proceeds go to the World Relief and Refugee Empowerment Program.
The drive is co-sponsored by the Diversity Committee and the Graduate Association
of African-American History.
