May 16, 2014 - Elmhurst College in Illinois recently presented a new leadership award
named for an accomplished alumna: Dr. Rosie Phillips Bingham, vice president for Student
Affairs at the University of Memphis.
Launched in 2013, the President’s Leadership Academy (PLA) is a four-year leadership
development program at Elmhurst that focuses on preparing first-generation students
and students of color to graduate as professionals and socially responsible leaders. Each year 35 students are selected for the program for the duration of their time
at the college.
Two awards, the Rosie Phillips Leadership Award and the Cohort Award, were presented to PLA members who have
exemplified leadership with the PLA and the larger Elmhurst College community.
The award was named for Bingham because of her commitment to student learning through
leadership development. It is considered the premier award within the President’s
