The 2011 Bandmasters Championship high school marching band contest on Saturday, Oct.
29, will be the largest in the event’s history. Some 37 bands will compete beginning
at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Gates will open at 10:00 a.m. The
University of Memphis marching band, “The Mighty Sound of the South,” will perform
at 10:00 p.m.
Hosted by the U of M Band Alumni Chapter, proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships
for the U of M band.
Originally known as The Mid-South Invitational, The Bandmasters Championship began
in 1963. In the 1990’s the Band Alumni Chapter took responsibility for the event,
which has hosted marching bands from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida,
and Alabama.
