The University of Memphis has named three faculty members as Suzanne Downs Palmer
Professors for academic year 2011-12. Now in its ninth year, the awards program recognizes
individual faculty contributions to achieving the mission of the Fogelman College
of Business & Economics. Awards can be given in three categories: teaching, research
and service. Dean Rajiv Grover presented each recipient a recognition plaque and
$10,000.

Dr. Emin Babakus, professor of marketing and supply chain management, received a Palmer
Professorship for teaching. He was recognized for his excellent evaluations by students
and his success at teaching difficult courses at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels.

Dr. Charles A. Pierce, professor of management, was named a Palmer Professor for his
research and for his sustained and exemplary scholarship, with three papers in A+
journals and seven in A journals within the last three years.

Dr. Albert Okunade, professor of economics, received a Palmer Award for his extraordinary
service contributions to the FCBE student honors program and for his long record of
contributions in service roles to the department, college, and University, as well
as to the economics profession.

The professorships were established by a $400,000 gift to the Fogelman College by
University of Memphis alumnus Dan Palmer in memory of his wife and in appreciation
for the education he received at the University.
