UofM Events Oct. 5-7 Will Focus on Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness

September 24, 2015 - The University of Memphis Office for Institutional Equity and Office of Student Conduct will be hosting events Oct. 5-7 focused on sexual assault prevention and awareness. The events include:

Monday, Oct. 5 - "Let's Talk About Sex," 5:30 p.m., University Center Theatre. An open discussion about current and developing topics related to sexual activity among college students including consent, sex education, contraception, rape culture, societally imposed shame and double standards. Panelists will include Dr. K.B. Turner, chair of Criminology and Criminal Justice; Claudia Haltom from A Step Ahead Foundation; Lisa Moore from Girls Inc. of Memphis; and Mollie Anderson, UofM doctoral student in experimental psychology.

Tuesday, Oct. 6 - Community Resources Fair, 11:30 am to 1 p.m., University Center Atrium. University and local organizations will provide information about services they provide related to sexual assault, domestic violence, counseling services and more.

Screenings of The Hunting Ground, 1 and 7 p.m., Michael D. Rose Theatre. The documentary offers a look at the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses, university responses to these incidents, and the toll they take on survivors. The UofM was selected for the showcase screening, which is being underwritten by a grant secured by the filmmaker and features writer-director Kirby Dick in a panel discussion following each of the screenings.

Wednesday, Oct. 7 - Take a Stand Day. Activities will include a Pledge Campaign, where individuals can show their commitment to preventing sexual assault by making a pledge.
