Dr. Robin Poston became involved with the Project Management Institute when writing
a paper about the benefits of collaboration between universities and local PMI chapters.
In the workplace the demand for project managers is increasing, but many college graduates
are not equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to fill these roles. Dr.
Poston noted that when project management professionals volunteer to assist students
in their learning, the students receive a better education, get hands-on experience
in the industry, learn practical skills, and form relationships with project management
professionals.
Dr. Poston now teaches an undergraduate class at the University of Memphis that focuses
on strategic project management. She has the opportunity to bounce ideas off of
PMI volunteers in order to determine the best ways to teach project management. Her
students have the benefit of learning from guest speakers and working closely with
project management professionals on class projects. This is also a great way for
PMI volunteers to recruit future employees. The strong collaboration and open connectivity
in sharing information has proven to be valuable for everyone involved.
On May 4, 2010, the Project Management Institute chapter meeting will be held on campus,
where around 100 professionals from the industry will gather for a buffet dinner.
Students will receive certificates of achievement, and the student winner of an ongoing
project management contest will receive an award from PMI.
