There are various performance and teaching opportunities available for woodwind students at the University of Memphis. The University Symphony Orchestra performs concerts in the fall and spring semesters. Orchestra members play in the pit for University of Memphis Opera productions. The University Bands program consists of the Athletic bands including "The Mighty Sound of the South" and two pep bands; and three concert ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Band, and the University Band. Smaller ensembles for woodwinds are the Contemporary Chamber Players and Collegium Musicum. There are flute ensembles, woodwind quartets and quintets, a saxophone ensemble, and chamber music groups. Jazz musicians may play in Southern Comfort, Jazz Ensemble II and in small combos. Student-conducted ensembles perform actively on and off campus. Woodwind faculty perform with Memphis area musical organizations such as the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the River City Band, and the Germantown Symphony Orchestra.
Degrees offered in Woodwinds are Bachelor of Music, Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts.
