The Brass Area offers applied instruction in trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and
tuba. Weekly master classes featuring faculty and guest artists offer students opportunities
for solo and chamber music coaching. The brass faculty are members of the Memphis Brass Quintet, the brass ensemble in residence at the University of Memphis.
There are numerous ensemble opportunities available for brass students. The University
Symphony Orchestra performs concerts in the fall and spring semesters. Orchestra members
play in the pit for University of Memphis Opera productions. The University Band program
consists of the Athletic bands including "The Mighty Sound of the South" and two pep
bands; and three concert ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Band,
and the Concert Band. Smaller ensembles for brass players include the Contemporary
Music Ensemble and Collegium Musicum. Jazz musicians may play in Southern Comfort
and two other big bands, numerous combos, and the contemporary popular/rock/jazz group
Blue Ascendance. In addition, there are various student ensembles performing actively
on and off campus. U of M music students play in Memphis area musical organizations
such as the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the River City Band, and the Germantown Symphony.
