The CMS Preparatory Studies Division of the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music was created for high school students who aspire to a high level of musical achievement.

Using a variety of educational experiences, students are prepared for a lifetime of music making regardless of their educational or professional aspirations.  For students intending on the study of music at the university level, special emphasis is placed on musical and technical skill development necessary for their success at that level including guidance through the application/audition process.

Entry level into the Preparatory Studies Division will be determined by instrumental audition. Auditions are scheduled through the Community Music School 901.678.4244. Instruction is offered on all orchestral instruments (strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion) as well as piano, organ, harpsichord, harp, guitar and voice.

Each student accepted into the Preparatory Division studies privately with a member of the University of Memphis, Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music Faculty or a selected outstanding professional community musician.  Included in the curriculum is a class in musicianship.  Students are encouraged to supplement these lessons by participating in ensembles and elective courses offered through the CMS.  These include MAYWE (Memphis Area Youth Wind Ensemble), Flute Choir, Chamber Music Academy as well as other opportunities outside the CMS including the Memphis Youth Symphony.

Accepted students receive:

  • Fifteen private lessons - One hour per week
  • Ten musicianship classes - aural and written theory
  • Audition practice with Scheidt School of Music faculty
  • Opportunity to perform as a featured artist in the “STELLA D’ORO” spring concert series (must be enrolled in spring).
  • Opportunity to perform in formal and informal recitals and concerts

Private lessons are scheduled at the convenience of the professor and student. Musicianship class will meet Thursday 5:30 - 6:30 pm.  All lessons and classes meet at the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music.

Tuition:  Varies according to instructor.  Please call the CMS office at 901.678.4244 for rates.
