For Undergraduate Music Majors - Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students
To become enrolled in the School of Music, all prospective students must be accepted
by both the School of Music, and by the University. Acceptance by the School is contingent
upon being accepted by the University. Seek enrollment in the University by contacting
the Undergraduate Office of Admissions: (901) 678-2111 or http://memphis.edu/future.htm.
Every student wishing to enroll in the School of Music as a Music Major in any concentration
must have an audition or orientation, and take music theory and piano placement exams.
Apply to audition online at: http://www.memphis.edu/music/future/forms.php.
Regarding undergraduate placements for music majors, students with no piano experience
will not be asked to play. Students who have studied piano should prepare a piece
that represents their level of playing; sight-reading and scales will be assessed.
To be placed in Theory I (MUTC 1008/1010), students must be able to write all major
and minor key signatures in treble and bass clef, know all major and three forms of
minor scales, and demonstrate an understanding of common rhythmic notation, including
simple and compound meters and note and rest notation. Students who take the theory
placement test and do not place into Theory I will be advised to take an online basic
music theory course during the summer. The online course must be passed successfully
for acceptance into the first course of the School of Music's theory sequence, which
is only offered in the fall semester.
For Music Minors
Any student wishing to minor in music must perform an audition, take a theory placement
test, and be accepted as a Minor by the School of Music. The Minor in Music consists
of 21 hours from the following: 4 hours applied music individual instruction; 2 semesters
appropriate ensembles; Music Theory (MUTC 1008 and 1009); Music History (3 hours from
MUHL 3301, 3302, 3303); 6 hours electives in music; 25 concert/recital attendance
requirement. Music Minors are advised by applied music faculty.
For Undergraduate Non-music Majors
Non-music majors who wish to take Applied Lessons must audition to be approved for
private study. All undergraduate students who take applied private lessons are required
to perform in an ensemble as selected and/or approved by faculty; group classes exempt.
A theory placement test is required. A piano placement test is not required. Students
who are accepted for lessons only are offered lessons as room in the studios allows.
Non-majors who want to study piano or theory have several options. Non-majors may
register for Class Piano MUAP 1100 or Basic Theory MUTC 1001 (only offered in the
Spring semester) with no audition or permit. Theory and piano classes beyond this
level require placement exams. To continue the theory sequence past MUTC 1008, students
must have passed the previous course with a "C" or better.
Non-music majors who wish to participate in ensembles are not required to take theory
or piano placement examinations, nor audition for the School of Music. To participate
in an ensemble, contact the conductor of the ensemble and participate in ensemble
placements the week before the fall semester begins. See the School of Music website
homepage for ensemble placement information.
For Music Business and Recording Technology Majors
Music Business and Recording Technology applicants must meet academic standards required
by the Music Industry division before attending a Music Industry Orientation/Audition
Day to seek admission into Music Industry programs. Acceptance is based on: completion
of academic standards; provision of required documentation; an essay; attendance on
an Audition Day for placement tests; and participation during a Music Industry Orientation.
Acceptance into Music Industry Division degree programs is not solely based on high
performance proficiency on an instrument or voice.
