Dr.
Rosie Phillips Bingham, a native Memphian, has been named
Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Memphis.
She will assume those duties May 1.
Dr.
Bingham had been Assistant Vice President for Students Affairs
and Student Development at the U of M since 1993. Her areas
of responsibility included the Center for Student Development,
Career and Employment Services, Student Disability Services,
and Student Health Services.
In
her new position, Dr. Bingham will maintain her earlier responsibilities
and will also oversee the Dean of Students, Residence Life,
Minority Affairs, Campus Recreation, Student Activities, the
University Center and the Rose Theatre, Judicial and Ethical
Programs, the Child Care Center, Student Leadership, Greek
Affairs, Adult and Commuter Student Services, and Commencement.
In
making the announcement of Dr. Bingham's appointment, U of
M President Shirley Raines said, "It's very encouraging
to know that after a national search for the Vice President
for Student Affairs, we found the best candidate already on
our campus. Dr. Bingham not only brings outstanding academic
and professional qualifications, but, equally as important,
she brings knowledge and understanding of the University of
Memphis and its students. Just as we have benefited from her
expertise for the past 18 years, we look forward to much more
progress as a university with her help in the future."
Dr.
Bingham joined the University in 1985 as Director of the Center
for Student Development, then became an adjunct professor
in the Department of Psychology and the Department of Counseling,
Educational Psychology and Research. She has served on some
50 University committees and is a recipient of the University's
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Award.
She
is a Fellow and past divisional president of the American
Psychological Association, and she received the Academy of
Counseling Psychology Distinguished Service Award in 2000.
In addition to her involvement with an impressive array of
national presentations, journal articles, book chapters, and
journal editorial boards, Dr. Bingham was one of 15 persons
selected to participate in the International Women of Color
Development Incubator this year.
Dr.
Bingham's commitment to the Memphis community is evidenced
by her many activities and leadership positions. She has served
on the Women's Foundation Board of Directors since 1995 and
is currently Vice Chair and Chair-Elect of the Foundation.
A
graduate of Elmhurst College in Illinois, Dr. Bingham earned
a master's degree in counseling and guidance and a doctorate
in counseling psychology, both from The Ohio State University.
Outgoing
Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Donald K. Carson said
of Bingham's appointment, "I am delighted that Dr. Bingham
is replacing me as the Vice President for Student Affairs.
She has been an invaluable colleague for 18 years and has
demonstrated her capability and strong commitment to the University.
Dr. Bingham brings a wealth of experience, a national reputation
in her field, and the strong personal qualities necessary
to be a truly outstanding Vice President for Student Affairs."
