FedEx Institute Develops Partnership to Help Turn Research Projects into Research Products

EmergeMemphis has joined the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology's Partner Network at the Observer Level.

The Institute's Partner Network consists of representatives from external organizations including private companies, academic and research organizations and community-based organizations. Partner Network p articipants are committed to supporting research and operations at the Institute. In return, the Partners have a voice in identifying priority research support areas and receive exclusive advanced briefings on emerging product and technology developments on campus. The other participants in the FedEx Institute of Technology's Partner Network are FedEx, Steelcase, AutoZone, BellSouth, Time Warner Cable, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare, Oak Ridge National Laboratories and Memphis Business Interiors.

One of the goals of the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology is to help researchers at the U of M take their research from the lab to the business world. EmergeMemphis helps high potential innovative businesses grow and prosper in Memphis. Currently, they provide 20 local entrepreneurial companies shared office services, business development assistance, networking opportunities, financial review and fundraising assistance. As research projects at the U of M develop into products with commercial potential, EmergeMemphis' business expertise will be a valuable asset.

"The FedEx Institute exists to bridge the gap between industry and academic research and having a connection with EmergeMemphis is important to the Institute's role," said Andy Meyers, executive director of the Institute.

According to Gwin Scott, president of EmergeMemphis, "EmergeMemphis plays a needed role in the economy of the Mid-South by assisting others in starting up businesses. In order to do this, we need to be where the great ideas are born and help people turn them into businesses. Great ideas are born at the Institute."
