Come celebrate the arrival of spring at the University District Spring Fest on Saturday, April 16. This new family-and-music-oriented event will take place on Walker Street between Highland and Brister from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free, and there will be entertainment for all ages and food for all tastes. The Mason YMCA on Walker will offer swimming pool games, 3-on-3 pickup basketball games, a moon bounce and more. The Memphis Grizzlies will bring their van and offer a variety of basketball-oriented activities. The University of Memphis mascot, Pouncer, and the U of M pom pon squad will be on hand from 11 a.m. to noon. Local artists and craftsmen will display their wares, and would-be artists can try their hand at being creative, too, in the Impromptu Art Contest. Businesses from the area will have exhibits at the festival, and Brother Juniper's will offer its jam and jellies for sale to benefit the Church Health Center. Music will be the mainstay of the festival. Local songwriters and musicians will perform all day, and there will be a "showcase of bands" in the afternoon. The evening hours will showcase a variety of local jazz and blues artists, including Eddie Smith, Free World and others performing on the main stage. Free parking for the festival will be available at Highland Street Church of Christ, St. Luke's Methodist Church. The Spring Fest Street Party is sponsored by the University District Inc. All proceeds from the event will be used for community development projects in the surrounding neighborhoods. For more information, call Nita Black at 413-1315 or e-mail nitab@memphisoriginals.com.
