The
Ground Water Institute, a part of the University of Memphis'
Herff College of Engineering, will present a free public discussion
of water resources in the Mid-South on Sunday, Aug. 31. The
program, sponsored by Friends of the University Libraries,
will begin at 3 p.m. in the Ned R. McWherter Library, Room
226.
The
program will be the closing event of a month-long exhibit
on National Water Quality Month being featured at the library
throughout August.
Refreshments
will be served. Parking is available in the garage adjacent
to the Fogelman Executive Center.
The
lecture will offer a look at the development of the public
water supply for the Memphis area since the early 1800s and
a description of the geologic makeup of the region. Also discussed
will be methods through which Mid-Southerners obtain their
drinking water and typical water treatment processes that
ensure clean water.
Additionally,
the Ground Water Institute will outline some of its research
activities that promote understanding of the water system
and maintaining water quantity and quality for future generations.
Ground
water is the sole drinking source for the Memphis community.
The Mid-South has an extensive, high-quality ground water
system.
