Voices
from the past will offer a unique view of the Civil War during
a lecture at noon, Sept. 1, in Room 226 of the Ned R. McWherter
Library at the University of Memphis. Ed Frank, curator of
the Special Collections Department/Mississippi Valley Collection,
will present "The 'Little Bugs' Speak: Voices from the
Civil War."
Frank
will offer a "worm's eye view" of Civil War using
excerpts from the many sets of letters and journals held in
the Mississippi Valley Collection. His talk will explain how
the events of 1860-65 appeared to the average soldiers and
civilians who experienced them first-hand. The writings address
such themes as war, loyalty, identity, loss, and hardship.
The
lecture is free, and the public is invited. Refreshments will
be served. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the
University Libraries.
