Students entering college are embarking on a new stage of their lives. Freshmen at the University of Memphis will mark that beginning with the Freshman Convocation on Monday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre.

During the ceremony, participants will be introduced to U of M traditions and will receive advice on becoming successful students.

Alumni and students will share their stories of life at the U of M. Other speakers will include President Shirley Raines, Provost Ralph Faudree, and Dr. Rosie Bingham, vice president for student affairs.

Entertainment will be provided by the U of M Pep Band, cheerleaders, and Pouncer, the Tiger mascot.

Following Convocation, there will be a picnic, entertainment, and games on the Alumni Mall.

Between 1,900 and 2,000 first-time freshmen will be enrolled at the U of M this fall. August 30 is also the University's first day of classes for the new academic year.
