Warren Haggard Named to Herff Chair of Excellence

Dr. Warren O. Haggard has joined the University of Memphis Herff College of Engineering as professor and Herff Chair of Excellence in Biomedical Engineering.

Haggard comes to the U of M from Wright Medical Technology Inc., where he was vice president of advanced technology. He is a well-known applied scientist and has led the development of many clinically successful products.

Haggard plans to use his experience to expand the applied musculoskeletal research efforts of the Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering of the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee.

His interests include applied tissue engineering materials research, particularly in the musculoskeletal applications of healing of bone defects; functional repair of cartilage, ligaments and tendons; cellular interactions with modified tissue engineered scaffolds; and local delivery of biological agents with resorptive scaffolds. Haggard also will continue research into enhancing available bio-orthopedic implant materials.

A fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Haggard is also a recipient of the Leroy Wyman Award from the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) Committee F04. He has written numerous articles for peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. Haggard also serves as a reviewer for two biomaterials-related scientific journals and is vice chair of the ASTM Tissue Engineered Products Standards Committee.
