The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA), a division of the National Safety Council, has selected the University of Memphis' Environmental Health and Safety newsletter to receive the 2006 Newsletter Award of Excellence.

Universities from North America, Europe, and China submitted entries. Newsletters were judged on content, writing, illustrations, design and printing, variety of subject matter, frequency of publication, and distribution.

Alton Simpson, director of Environmental Health and Safety, accepted the award on behalf of the University during the July CSHEMA Conference in Anaheim, Calif.

"This is a wonderful honor for Al Simpson and the entire Environmental Health and Safety office," said Dr. Andrew Meyers, U of M vice provost for research. "But it simply reaffirms what many faculty, staff, and administrators across campus already know about EHS. Every day this group of hard-working men and women is on campus doing the little, often invisible, things that help to safeguard the University of Memphis and its employees."
