Students entering college are embarking on a new and exciting phase of their lives. The University of Memphis will mark the beginning of that journey with Freshman Convocation on Monday, Aug. 27, the first day of classes for academic year 2007-08.
The event begins at 2:11 p.m. (appropriate for the class of 2011) in the Michael D. Rose Theatre.
Participants will learn about University traditions and will get advice on how to become successful students. Alumni and friends will share stories of their lives and experiences at the University of Memphis. Other speakers will include President Shirley Raines, Provost Ralph Faudree, and Vice President for Student Affairs Rosie Bingham.
Entertainment will be provided by the U of M Pep Band, cheerleaders, and Pouncer, the Tiger mascot.
Immediately following Convocation, a “beam signing” will officially launch construction of the U of M’s new University Center. Students, faculty, staff, and special guests will have the opportunity to leave their mark on the building by signing their names and messages on beams, which will later be used in the construction of the Center. The event will be held at the construction site in front of the Administration Building.
