The Metropolitan Memphis Hotel and Lodging Association has made a $100,000 donation to the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management at the University of Memphis. The gift will fund scholarships for hospitality students.

“On behalf of the students of the University of Memphis, thank you to the Hotel and Lodging Association for this generous gift,” said U of M President Shirley Raines. “The Kemmons Wilson School enjoys broad-based support among the dedicated professionals in our community. The students and I appreciate the support you give them in their studies and in their experiences in your businesses.”

Dr. Rajiv Grover, dean of the Fogelman College of Business & Economics, noted the timing of the gift. “How appropriate that the MMHLA presents this gift during August, a month when so many visitors to our city are celebrating the life of Elvis Presley and experiencing first-hand the high-caliber hospitality services provided by MMHLA members,” he said. “This gift provides the Kemmons Wilson School with more resources to continue to attract first-rate students to fill positions in the hospitality industry in the Memphis area and beyond.”

Richard Zurburg, interim director of the school, said the MMHLA’s contribution is a reflection of how industry and education can work together to benefit the professional development of students. “We are fortunate to have a relationship with the MMHLA which supports the growth of the Kemmons Wilson School,” Zurburg said. “As the Kemmons Wilson School starts its sixth year of operation, this contribution will allow us to grow our student body to meet the future needs of the hospitality industry for professional management.”

The Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management, funded by a $15 million gift from Kemmons Wilson, is an impressive four-story, 138,000-square-foot structure that functions as an educational facility as well as an 82-suite hotel. Many classes are taught inside the hotel, giving students unique and valuable insight into a career field that is one of the largest employers in the world. The Wilson School is a part of the University of Memphis’ distinguished Fogelman College of Business & Economics.
